Does a goldendoodle, for instance, still have an insane drive to retreive anything? (like a golden retreiver does) Do they naturally want to sniff out birds or anything else they can find? Or do they eat out of china, whine, pee/poo indoors, wear knit sweaters, and fear everything? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the standard poodle was originally a hunting dog, but in recent history, I suspect not many have actually had a downed bird in their mouth. ThanksAre labradoodles or goldendoodles any good for hunting? Or are they more likely to be simply bigger poodles.?
Well, since Poodles, Labs and Goldens are all water retrieving dogs, you would think that they would be good hunting dogs.
And actually, people do still use the Standard Poodle for water retrieving. Do a search for working poodle or field poodle.
My Standard has a very high prey drive and is a far better retriever than my brothers Golden. Whats this eating out of china and fearing everything talk about? Certainly not Standard Poodles. Funny how people have this attitude that Poodles are some kind of uppity little dog. And I am amazed how many people ask me why my dog looks like a Poodle but is so big..is it a mix?. They dont even know what a Standard Poodle is or how big they get.
But, since the ';doodles'; are usually a product of backyard breeding, and people looking to make a quick buck, I dont know if you would be able to find a really good hunting dog. Not like you would with a good breeder of hunting Labs (for i.e) who's purpose of breeding is to breed the perfect dog.Are labradoodles or goldendoodles any good for hunting? Or are they more likely to be simply bigger poodles.?
yes they make good hunters. The poodles fur repels water just like the curly coated retriever, which is much like a poodle. with proper training they will be a good hunter, Im also in the veterinarian field, and the breeds you are talking about are very inteligent, even if they are mixed. After all,how were new breeds or types of breeds made? By crossbreeding,Inbreeding,Outcasting and ect..
There's no way to predict. 'Doodles are mixed breed dogs and can have the personality of a lab/golden, the personality of a poodle, or something similar to either or both. Mixing two breeds isn't like mixing paint colors where yellow and blue make green. You won't get a dog that splits the difference between the two breeds (half the retrieve drive of a golden, half the coat value of a poodle). You won't know until the dog grows up.
You can't truly predict the working qualities of ANY dog until they're tested, but if you want specific qualities from a dog, go to a breeder that breeds for those qualities. If you want a neat looking mixed breed dog, the Petfinder has tons of them for much cheaper than puppymill prices.
poodles are retrievers too! they were bred for hunting and the standard poodle is already bigger then both these other retievers!! hope that helps :)
Both are good dogs.
I honestly hope you diddnt pay anything for those so called ';designer breeds'; they are not recognized as a breed in any official way, and are known as ';mutts';. so yeah, just like any mutt, those mutts may like to hunt. or not.
I have a Goldendoodle, and he chases anything that moves. Not sure if that means he would be a good hunter. I think they are more of an active family dog than anything.
My Goldendoodle is a total ';man';, he doesn't eat off china or any of that. He's as big as a pony too.
If you want a hunting dog stick to Labradors, Golden Retrievers,German Short-Haired Pointers ,Coon Hounds etc.In these mixes you do not know no matter what they look like what breed temperament will come thru and they are fad breeds.

If you are looking to shoot a mature buck, make sure you are sitting in your stand as long as possible. Especially in the early season, the older deer usually hit the food sources later than the younger deer and usually come out at last light. Deer Scent
